Input Opportunity – California 2023 State Hazard Mitigation Plan Public Review Draft
CalOES has been working to update its 2018 State Hazard Mitigation Plan, which is set to expire September 2023. The public review draft of the 2023 State Hazard Mitigation Plan (SHMP) is now available for comments, edits, and feedback until Friday, March 24, 2023.
The SHMP is California’s primary hazard mitigation guidance document. It details California’s historical and current hazards, identifies mitigation strategies and actions to address those hazards, and provides guidance to local jurisdictions developing their own hazard mitigation plans.
The 2023 SHMP expands on previous SHMP discussions of hazard impacts on equity priority communities and climate change as an exacerbator to hazard events. The 2023 SHMP also organizes hazards according to an impact ranking score, rather than by hazard type as seen in previous Plans. Critically, the 2023 SHMP uses a clearer organization method and plain language to ensure accessibility and readability for State agency stakeholders, local jurisdictions, and the general public.
SHMP Plan: There are two volumes to the plan: Volume 1 – Core Plan and Volume 2: Appendices. They can be downloaded from the CalOES SHMP website.
- You can submit comments, edits, and feedback directly to CalOES via their survey. Comments are due by Friday, March 24, 2023.
- The CRA will also be compiling and submitting comments. If you prefer you can submit your notes to the CRA by March 17 for incorporation into the feedback the CRA submits.
